Rarely do movies do justice to the intrepid nature of adolescence and all its conflicted antics like Carly May Borgstrom’s Ghost in the Blood

Scenario

After a young girl dies in an isolated religious mountain community, a group of teenage girls decide to embrace their own dark side and fight the evil spirits they believe killed her. A thrilling, soul-stirring, sometimes unbearably suspenseful, monster movie that seems to take “the tired monster as a metaphor”; it turns it on its head in a refreshing and terrifying way.

Howell, who played the daughter of Hunter Hunter, another incredible horror film) returns to the deserted Appalachian mining town where her father (the always unsettling Canadian character actor Greg Brick) grew up. Bullying, family drama, and the deep, heartbreaking sense of being out of one’s way that only exists in adolescence.

Her father is a strange, enigmatic, supportive, and loving guy on one note, and dangerously volatile on the other, and Brick gives her all the complexity needed to portray a father figure who resonates with something close to what she experiences in the real world. Emerson and her new friend Delilah (Sarah Maxine-Racicott) try to navigate their budding friendship with possible romance and fight the encroaching darkness of witchcraft based on their own nature, which, in a town so steeped in religion, is a difficult endeavor.

And the devil?

Through Borgstrom’s assured performance and direction, the film manages to show people as complex, indefinable phenomena rather than black-and-white characters or archetypal, concrete situations, and it feels like real, tangible life is basically unfolding before us. God, I won’t say much, but I haven’t seen a more thrilling and sinister turn of events in a third act in a while, a brutally tense, real turn that lands with a satisfying thud for any viewer who felt the film was easily moving in the horror department up until then.
