Michael Schur was inspired to create A Man On the Inside after watching the Chilean documentary The Mole Agent

Charles, a pensioner, gets a new lease on life when he answers a private detective’s ad and becomes a mole in a secret investigation at a nursing home.

He says: “The documentary The Mole Agent is powerful because it evokes a remarkably similar feeling in people regardless of age, ethnicity and gender, and I would describe that feeling very simply as: ‘I have to call my mom.’ In our show, we tried to achieve something similar with the tone: does our show fundamentally contribute to that feeling that makes us want to call our mothers?

Even those who come for the mystery, which has been given less focus, should be captivated by the humanity that comes through not only in the script but also in the portrayal of all the cast

I think that many works of fiction have the inherent goal of making you think something like: ‘It was an honor to be part of the lives of these fictional characters.’ This show undeniably achieves that goal well.

Compliments to all the departments involved

Although Netflix has been strict with series renewals lately, I hope they fulfill the potential of this series by granting them a second season as I hope to see more of the journeys of these incredible characters.
