MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy about Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), an American girl. An Afghan army veteran who finds herself at odds with her family over the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend in the army. Despite the tenacity of her VA advisor (Morgan Freeman), the stern love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the lightheartedness of an unexpected love interest, Merit’s dysfunctional-cozy friendship with Zoe keeps the duo isolated from the world. That is until Merit’s long-lost grandfather (Ed Harris), holed up in his ancestral lake house, begins to lose himself and needs the one thing he refuses… help. Ultimately, it’s a film about a complicated friendship, a fractured family, and the complex ways we process grief.
