After a traumatic event during residency, young medical student James Heyman (Namir Smallwood) is transferred to a rural hospital to start over. Seeing that James is having difficulty communicating with patients, Dr. Harrison (a veteran of theater and film, Michael Potts) suggests that he attend classes on bedside manner and establishing deeper relationships with patients. The demons of James’ past begin to haunt him when he is involved in a case with a young asthmatic (Sidney Flanigan, perhaps not uncommon) with mysterious symptoms. His grip on reality begins to loosen as his disturbing nightmares, anxiety-induced thoughts, and physical trauma collide with the harsh reality of the medical world. Director Alex Thomson assembles a strong cast of veteran characters in his follow-up to SAINT-FRANCIS – and predecessor to Ghost World – in this humanistic and unconventional vision of the genre.
